The View

When you wake up in the morning and walk towards the porch, what would you like your view to be?

Something that’s beautiful maybe a garden full of flowers, smiling faces and a tint of love in the air.

Who would want to wake up and see a barren land ?

No matter where you are or whatever you are going through, always wish well for others. Their vibrations  or them having a good life is going to be the good view that you should wake up to.

Ironically, it is good to have a greener grass on the other side as that’s the view that’s going to make you want to wake up.

Always wish good and well for this planet.

As they say in a prayer of Sikh religion,

” Sarbat da Bhala”

that means ‘ May everyone prosper ! ‘.

No Time Travel

Time Travelling is possible. You can be transported to a different world through your mind as well as your screens. ISN’T IT?

When you shut them off, be it your mind or your device , it takes seconds to come back to the earth-  the real world.

On a serious note, ofcourse, mindfulness has taken a back seat in the present era as distractions are innumerable. I read in a book that our ‘ Will Power ‘ is a finite source and gets consumed big time when we try to bring back the attention to what we are actually doing.

Mindless scrolling during work hours ,evening time, night time, morning time is impacting our efficiency and productivity. In  a survey ,it was found that biggest distraction during work hours is not sleep, food or sex, but the constant need to check social media ,watch a movie, surf the net and listen to music . So, how can we help ourselves from falling into fathomless pit of the web and not while away the precious time?

1) Be aware of what you are doing. Knowing that your actions and habits are flawed is the first step towards changing them.

2) Locking away your mobile phone will not help. Rather understand and implement the power of daily routine and rituals.

a) Set time limit for yourself according to the task and don’t use mobile unless the work is complete.

b) Keep your cellphone on mute. It will aid a lot to pacify the urge to check your phone time and again.

c) Give yourself 10 minutes break to surf the web and check notififications after every 3 hrs.

3) Look at the longer vision always and remember why you started this all at the first place( to be productive) to keep your self motivated.

4) Whenever there is a craving for gb ( giga bytes) consumption, give your brain some other task that can help you in some other way. For instance, go and take a small walk,  read the budget, complete some pending task, ask a long lost colleague how he is doing. You will be satisfied and at the same time surprised about how much one can do in small chunks.

5) When you just need a break, just close your eyes and relax. But stay away from electronic gadgets. ( It’s difficult. But, you should do it, you know it’s the right thing.)

6) While doing useful work on these electronic devices, be mindful of not getting distracted by some not so relevant apps and notifications.

7) If messages are not urgent, try replying  to most of them at a common time and not when the phone beeps.

We feel 24 hours in a day are less and  now we know it’s not true. Our habits can even make 13 months in a year. Try sleeping at the right time and getting up at 5 not 7 in the morning and you will get 1 month bonus.

Virtual world is not real. Realworld is real.

So, stop the ‘Time Travel’. Be mindful of the present. Begin the ‘Deep Work’.

Fallen Tree

Everyday, I would see it.

Sometimes amazed by it’s structure,  I would gaze at it intently for minutes and at other times, I would just pass by.

I had formed a strange connection with it. I rejoiced when leaves grew on it. I was mesmerized by its beauty even when it didn’t have a single leaf on it.


It was the loudest downpour

I ever heard

It was not water from the heaven above

But it was the roots 

that had loosened their grip 

It was the fall of the Tree

My eyes were moist. I went to see the tree. Touched its trunk and the branches. Also, touched the soft threads of the broken wood.

It was blissful to be in the moment with the tree. I could feel the moment.

The Super Mario Effect

We all would agree that Learning is a lifelong process. At this point for  all the students out here, it’s even more crucial, isn’t it? So, today I am going to shed some light on the Tricks to the learning process i.e. The Super Mario Effect. Yes, the game that all of us were obsessed with at some point.

Have you ever thought, how much we could learn, if we didn’t think of failing?

When we played Mario, we didn’t give up just because we fell into a pit. Our main objective was to get into the castle and save Princess Peach. So, when we failed and had to start over again and again from the former levels, we didn’t give up because we so wanted to reach the final stage and rescue the Princess. We didn’t fear or crib about our failures, instead, we learnt from our failures. Next time we were near the pit, we knew what to do and when to jump so that we could avoid falling into the pit.

But in real life, Learning is considered to be a hideous task because we always link Learning to exams, we are embarrassed of our failures, ‘what we will people think ‘ and sometimes  even the’ I am not good enough ‘ philoshphies run on repeat mode in our brains when we fail. Apply the Super Mario Effect in such situations, make your Learnings a game. Focus on what you want and learn from your failures i.e reframe the challenges and face them as if it was a game. Failures will always be there and also,  don’t you think, Life will be  boring if there were no challenges. Oh , we can put it that way, What will Simmba do, if there was no 8 packed ab villain like Sonu Sood. You can’t have a good story without a good challenge or a villain. There is no fun.You need challenges in your life but don’t sweat out a lot on them. Treat your learning as a game and not an exam. As a thing you really want to do despite the challenges it brings. Adopt the Super Mario Effect, and make learning fun.

Sometimes it’s purposelessness

and at the others

it’s a philosphy 

that I lead  my life with it

Though there is a routine that gets to you every now and then, yet unintentionally or intentionally there is a philoshphy that we all follow to have a direction of where each day and to sum it up, our life is heading to and also, to keep ourselves in sane.

There are numerous philosophies, I have lived my life by till now. The choice of it depends on who you are , what you are looking for and is also largely driven, by situations around you.

Learning how to live in the present moment surfaces up after every few days as Mindfulness is something that I have actually forgotten, so ‘ Now ‘ has definitely come to the forefront.

Then , there is ‘ Love Yourself ‘, ‘ Know your worth ‘. I have always have had self- esteem issues . And, somehow I had always got that wrong as I tried to prove my worth to others, whereas the one needed to be assured of my worth was me.

Sometimes, fitness comes on the wheel. I know, it should be a regular thing, but yeah, in my life there is a zone, when I am into walking and running ( I love walking )and other days  ‘we are not friends anymore’ tag lines rules my days.

There are Days where you just go by the flow.  I would say ‘Acceptance‘ is the word. You don’t push hard, you don’t drool over the perfect outcome. You are just working, learning, growing and have left the future to the Universe. ‘Acceptance’ is very liberating at times, especially, when things are not going on as planned.

Gratitude‘ should always be there of whatever life is offering you. If you think a bit harder, things could have possibly been worser than now. But they aren’t ‘now’ .So, thank you. I believe the ‘lows’ have their own charm, that we only realise, when we are sharing the stories of our ‘low’ during our ‘high’ times.

The times when you live your writing. You wrote that piece, and just that moment when you find the right words, and you stop for few moments to savour what just happened. That bliss. Yeah, that’s unmatchable. So, yeah love or passion driven.

The day when you become your own observer. Not reacting but responding. Observing, why did you feel that way and you know learning about your traits even more. I will be turning 25 now, and I am still getting revelations about myself. ‘Oh that’s me , I am an empath and that’s why I feel drained at times. And sweat the small stuff’  , discovering more and more things about myself as I live my day.

‘ How important it is to be kind and helping. ‘ Being kind and polite in today’s world could be a bit overwhelming at times. Sometimes, you are surprised by the way others reciprocate kindness and sometimes you are let down. Just be kind and don’t expect anything. Don’t let the kind of response, you are getting, make you less kind. As I would like to say, ‘Being kind is the new strong.’

Sometimes, it’s about ‘Books‘ or ‘Series’. You live your life according to the book that you are reading. Since, I am into Self-Help books so the kind of book I am reading and if I feel connected the philosphy of that book will start playing in my life and if I find it helpful, it will stay even after the book has finished.

Interactions. There is a time when I make an effort to get in touch with old friends, like then interacting with them becomes my focus. Being an introvert, as I am happy in my own space, but yeah, there is zone when you have lingered alone for too long and then all of a sudden, you want to get chirpy.

So, the list is endless. May be I will continue it on some other post. I hope atleast some of you may find it relatable. Also, I would like to know, what’s your current philosphy?

My Bedtime Story


This is not a ususal bed time story. It’s the story that my mother and I live.

I am away from home these days and besides the people of my family, I also miss my bed.

I have got a double bed all for myself at my home. It’s a home inside my home for me. I am always sitting at the corner of the right side of my bed. One turn and I might be off the bed on the floor. Actually, according to my Mom, I do have many occupants on my bed, my books, handkerchief , mobile, glass of water etcetera. My mother hates them and  wants them to leave me, so that I can take the centre stage of my bed (the middle of my bed ). She often keeps reprimanding the occupants on my bed (organizing them) and side by side narrates me a bed time story after everyday or two. The stories she shares are of a different genre : request, order, threat. The moral of the story is how important it is to be at the centre of the stage(centre of my bed).

Away from home, I also have a double bed for me but I sit at the centre of my bed, have got no occupants.

Away from home, I always try to do what you would have wanted me to. I take care of things and myself, the way you would have. I am trying to follow each moral of your every story. 

But trust me, when I will be back home, I will again sit at the corner, just to hear that bed time story.

Ghar- A writer’s Journey

As I was about to hit the sack, just then, I stumbled upon a song ‘Ghar’ from the bollywood movie, ‘ Jab Harry Met Sejal’.

Khali hai jo tere bina, Main vo ghar hun tera’

It was so soothing and I strongly felt the connection.The lyrics were quite unusual from what we generally hear these days and yet, they beautifully described the feeling of love . I was touched by the lines.

I checked the lyricist, it was Irshad Kamil. Yes, the man behind blockbuster songs of movies such as Jab We Met, Love Aaj Kal, Aashiqui 2, Rockstar, Tamasha, Highway, Raanjhana and many more.

I mean who can forget his song ‘Nadaan Parindey ‘ from the movie Rockstar. The song described the philosophy of life so gracefully.

“Kaate chahe jitna paro se hawaon ko, khud se naa bach paayega tu.”

As much as you try to fly away, ultimately you must come back, says Dr. Kamil through these words.

I am very proud to say that he is an alumni of my University. Yeah, he is a PhD holder from Panjab University.

This brings me to another alumni of PU, a lad from Hoshiarpur, who has brought ‘ Sufism ‘ back in the present era. No prize for the right guess here, yes he has his Takhallus ( poetic name ) Sartaaj. Dr. Satinder Sartaaj says,

Bhala hai kaun ethey jittada te haarda yaaro,

Bhulekhey vich hai banda jo shekhi maarda yaaro’

It means no one is loser or winner on earth. The person is in illusion who reckon himself a supreme power.

The lines are like an elixir, if taken and inculcated, can change the way we perceive and live life.

You take any of Sartaaj’s song from’ Sai ‘(his most loved song- in which he puts forward his request to Sai) to Sajjan Razi ( in which he tells how important it is to conceal the new found love from the world ) all are so deep and enriching and put you in the contemplating mode.

Here are few lines from his song, Sajjan Razi,

” Sajjan razi hojve fer v , oh raula nahio payida paagla “

It means, one should stay quiet even if one’s beloved has said ‘yes’ to the proposal.

Just like Sartaaj and Dr. Kamil ,there are quite a many lyricists, writers , poets and shayars whose writings are very insightful. My words will fall short to describe them all, even if I take my entire life to do so, but I don’t want to miss this accomplished poet, lyricist and scriptwriter. Everytime, I listen to his poetry in the movie, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, I get goosebumps.

All these people have the talent of weaving emotions through their words and creating masterpieces. Nothing comes easy in life , yet, most of us would arguably say, that their art of writing is innate. They are gifted people.

May be or May be not. Having an inclination towards a particular art form is not in your control, it’s something that you are naturally gravitated towards. However, how fruitful is your journey in that particular art form to some extent might be in your hands.

So, here are few things that might play a role.

Dukh, dard, taqleef, pain.


According to a study, conducted on a group of people, 80% of the good writers seem to have gone through some sort of depression or a bad phase in their life.

Now, how does being sad and upset help?

I had read somewhere that sad mood makes you more aware and detail oriented. It sharpens your attention.

So, sadness makes you feel every emotion, feeling and life in general, very deeply and profoundly.

Just like Sartaaj did. His most popular song among the masses, ‘Sai ‘, came out when he was struggling with money issues. His song came out of his longing and his pain, and in the song he has been seen putting  his request to the creator.

Want to know more about pain and how it makes you more creative, watch the movie Rockstar.

As his  pain ( pain of the main character of Rockstar) in the movie grows, his music becomes better.

So, here, I am not emphasising that you go for a heartbreak, but I wouldn’t deny that having one, wouldn’t help you in becoming a good writer.

You cannot intentionally choose a heartbreak, but something that is in our control and is extremely powerful, when it comes to being a good writer is…

By the time, Javed Akhtar was 14- 15 years old, he knew thousands of shayaris by heart.

The biggest mistake, that amateur writers make these days, is that, they start writing before reading, says Javed Akhtar.

Unlike, the saintly figures like, Guru Nanak Dev Ji, who would ask his disciple ‘ Mardaana’ to play Rabab, and say that bani (verses) has come (to him through the creator), we need to read to be able to write.

You must read good literature to improve your writing performance, says Dr. Irshad Kamil.

‘ Parhya bin nahi likhya janda, jehre parhe bina likhde, eh Sartaaj Satinder varge Jugat ohnan toh seekhde ‘

says Sartaaj.

There are few more things that can make you dexterous in writing.

In next life, if given a chance, choose a family of writers or readers. What, I mean here, is that your upbringing and the kind of people you hang out with is bound to influence your work.

Sartaaj grew up seeing the faith of her grandmother in ‘ Gurbani ‘ ( scriptures )and this central idea of having ‘faith in the almighty’ could be seen in his much loved songs.

You get the ideas in the situations, you least expect to get them in. So, just trying out different things, exploring a little, not sitting at the same place in the same posture for a longer time,  observing people and things keenly, and having some peaceful alone time are the other ingredients that would add flavor to your dish.
